The Mbh −σ∗ Relation in Local Active Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
We examine whether active galaxies obey the same relation between black hole mass and stellar velocity dispersion as inactive systems, using the largest published sample of velocity dispersions for active nuclei to date. The combination of 56 original measurements with objects from the literature not only increases the sample from the 15 considered previously to 88 objects, but allows us to cover an unprecedented range in both stellar velocity dispersion (30–268 km s−1) and black hole mass (105 − 108.6 M⊙). In the MBH −σ∗ relation of active galaxies we find a lower zeropoint than the best-fit relation of Tremaine et al. (2002) for inactive galaxies, and an intrinsic scatter of 0.4 dex. There is also evidence for a flatter slope at low black hole masses. We discuss potential contributors to the observed offsets, including variations in the geometry of the broad-line region, evolution in the MBH −σ∗ relation, and differential growth between black holes and galaxy bulges. Subject headings: galaxies: active — galaxies: kinematics and dynamics — galaxies: nuclei — galaxies: Seyfert

The Mbh-σ Diagram, and the Offset Nature of Barred Active Galaxies
From a sample of 50 predominantly inactive galaxies with direct supermassive black hole mass measurements, it has recently been established that barred galaxies tend to reside rightward of the Mbh-σ relation defined by non-barred galaxies. Either black holes in barred galaxies tend to be anaemic or the central velocity dispersions in these galaxies have a tendency to be elevated by the presence...
متن کاملA Log-Quadratic Relation Between the Nuclear Black-Hole Masses and Velocity Dispersions of Galaxies
We demonstrate that a log-linear relation does not provide an adequate description of the correlation between the masses of Super-Massive Black-Holes (SMBH, Mbh) and the velocity dispersions of their host spheroid (σ). An unknown relation between logMbh and log σ may be expanded to second order to obtain a log-quadratic relation of the form log (Mbh) = α+β log (σ/200kms )+β2[log (σ/200kms )]2. ...
متن کاملThe Evolution of the Mbh-σ Relation
We examine the evolution of the black hole mass stellar velocity dispersion (MBH−σ) relation over cosmic time using simulations of galaxy mergers that include feedback from supermassive black hole growth. Our calculations have been shown to reproduce the power-law scaling of the local, redshift zero MBH−σ relation and yield the observed normalization for an appropriate choice of the feedback ef...
متن کاملAn Observed Fundamental Plane Relation for Supermassive Black Holes
We study observed correlations between supermassive black hole (BHs) and the properties of their host galaxies, and show that the observations define a BH “fundamental plane” (BHFP), of the form MBH ∝ σ3.0±0.3 R0.43±0.19 e or MBH ∝ M 0.54±0.17 ∗ σ 2.2±0.5, analogous to the FP of elliptical galaxies. The BHFP is preferred over a simple relation between MBH and any of σ, M∗, Mdyn, or Re alone at ...
متن کاملDwarf Seyfert 1 Nuclei and the Low-mass End of the Mbh −σ Relation
To examine the relationship between black hole mass and host galaxy velocity dispersion for low black hole masses, we have measured the velocity dispersions of 15 Seyfert 1 galaxies from the catalog of Greene & Ho (2004). These Seyferts were selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to have estimated black hole masses below 106 M⊙. The data are consistent with a straightforward downward extrap...
